SAP YL is a new product from SAP, with a lot of capabilities to integrate with SAP and non-SAP applications. If you are thinking that it is just a sub-component of EWM but available as a separate product then probably you are wrong. The product usage is growing a lot and a lot of new features being added. It is not just for a warehouse. There are many other industries that can use SAP YL.
Here is the high level overview the interfaces between SAP YL and other SAP SCM applications.

During Planning
SAP TM gets the orders for planning from SAP ERP like ECC or S4 HANA or Other ERP applications. Once the planning is completed in SAP TM, we will have the FO created. This FO is then interfaced with SAP EWM and SAP YL. It creates a TU/Vehicle in SAP EWM and a Yard Request in SAP YL. SAP YL communicates with SAP DAS and SAP LBN for the appointment creation.
At the time of Execution
The Driver arrives at the Yard. The Driver can use the self check-in or Yard user can check-in the truck. The appointment is confirmed. Also, this triggers the check-in of the TU/Vehicle in SAP EWM. Then, SAP YL can read the dock location/door via SAP DAS or SAP EWM based on the set up. The Yard user confirms the task and directs the truck to the dock location/door. This triggers the docking message to the SAP EWM. Then, the warehouse proceeds and completes the un/loading activity. Upon the un/loading end activity the subsequent task in the SAP YL gets activated. It could be to move the truck to a parking location or to the check point gate. Upon confirmation of this task, it sends undock message to the SAP EWM. Once check-out is posted in SAP YL, it triggers the check-out in SAP EWM as well. Which in turn posts GI to ERP and sends LDAP to SAP TM.
In the coming blog posts, we will see more details about these interfaces.
